Registration of Dogs

Per the City of Eagle Lake Code of Ordinances, Ordinance No. 2024-02, all dogs MUST be registered with the City of Eagle Lake. City Ordinance requires all dogs over the age of 4 months to be registered with the city annually. Failure to register your pet may result in fines of up to $2,000.00 a day until the pet is registered. (separate form required for each pet)

 From the City Manager:

“There is a lot of confusion related to the new dog registration ordinance. In response to comments received regarding the new ordinance, the following clarification is being provided. A provision to the ordinance will EXCLUDE the registration of cats.

1) The purpose of the registration program is to hold people accountable for the loose dogs we received so many complaints about. It will also provide a way to hold people accountable if their dog bites someone when not contained as required. We have had more than one dog bite case from loose dogs in the last year.
2) There is NO requirement to spay or neuter dogs under the new ordinance.
3) Rabies vaccinations have been required for years by state law and local ordinance. Your vet supplies this paperwork when you get your dog vaccinated.
4) We are just now beginning the registration program. As such, we are providing a 90-day grace period to get your dogs registered. You have until June 1, 2024, to complete the simple process.
5) If your dog is spayed or neutered, a copy of proof can be attached to the registration document. The purpose of attaching proof is to provide an additional method of identification should your pet be picked up and either have lost its collar or damaged the tag rendering it unreadable.
6) The registration fee is $5.00 per dog. The $5.00 cost was established to cover the costs of the tags only.
7) If your dog gets out and gets picked up and is registered, there will be NO fine under the registration ordinance.
8 ) The fine that is listed in the ordinance is a MAXIMUM fine. The City Council and/or administration do not assess fines. That is done by the court. A maximum fine means the fine cannot exceed that amount. It does not mean it will be that amount. Maximum fines are for deliberate repeat offenders.”
